Garmin Astro Customer Reviews

Thank you, I have received both DC30 collars. I have taken them out twice an has worked great on both my 40 pound Brittany, and my 20 pound Brittany Puppy. Neither one of them looked like they had a problem with wearing the collar. I was nice to see that when my older dog ran off he was about 90 yards away, then 100, 110, I called him back, he was heading back 100, 90, then must have saw something, 100, 110, 120 yards. Blew my whistle, and see the yardage start going down. As I was walking I saw he was coming up from behind me and then saw him come out of the woods. Right now with all the leave on the trees, I had no problem seeing where I was at, and where my dogs were at. I saw my 1 mile walk was about a 1.5 mile run for the puppy, and a 2.5 mile run for my older one. This really eases my mind with knowing where they are at all the time.

Thought I should send a note to you about the new Astro 220. I chose your company from a recommend from my brother and first bought a 2 dog trashbreaker, your service was great, always fast and friendly. We had been using Johnson collars for years on our 8 dog pack of bear hounds. Was interested in the GPS, but was wary of a limited range compared to the normal telemetry collars. We hunt the hills of West Virginia, it is not uncommon to have a change in elevation of 500-1000 feet. With the hills, sometimes we would lose track at less than a mile. With gas prices high, and the amount of time we spent looking for dogs, I ordered a 2 dog Astro 220. On the very first hunt everyone was very impressed. Using the additional long range antenna, we seemed to get 90% of the range of the telemetry collars. Having the hard data from the Garmin was so much better than the fuzzy "that direction" made the Garmin much more useful than the normal collars. We knew when to go to the tree, call them back, if the chase busted up, and just made a more enjoyable hunt. We spend much more time now running bear, instead of hunting dogs. In good terrain conditions we have had a track at 5.2 miles. We have an order in now for 2 more DC 30 collars. We plan on having Garmin collars for every dog in the future. We still keep the telemetry collars on each dog for the bit of extra range and the safety of a signal that won't run out of battery power. That is the only downside we see of the Garmin, battery life. We run with the 10 second update and get better than 24 hours of life, but for bear hounds to spend the night in the woods is not unusual. If Garmin asks for feedback, it would be nice to be able to change update interval at long range. For instance if it seems the dog would not be recovered that day, change the update to 30 seconds to extend battery life. I think the collars will pay for themselves by gas saving and the huge time saving in catching up with far running hounds. Feel free to publish this review and make any minor changes and edits that need to be done. Thanks again from a very satisfied customer. Mike - Poca, WV

I purchased the Astro before the DC30 collars were available and was happy with the performance. The harness model antenna was a weak point and I quickly learned to have an extra or two in the vest because they often did not survive the day. After upgrading to the DC30 that problem was eliminated. I hunt upland birds, chukar-Hungarian partridge-quail-pheasant, with 2 GS pointers. The hunting is done in arid areas of 2,500 to 3,800 elevation. One dog 'runs big' and the other is a 13 year old 85% deaf 'boot licker'. The old boy can't hear the whistle and the Astro is great for finding him and bringing him back to the hunt. The younger dog has an average find of 250+ yards (I know....If you had told me I would allow a dog to run that big 6 years ago I would have told you no way) and has pointed and held for over the nose shooting at 850 yards+. Without the Astro finding a locked-up pointing dog in sagebrush at those distances is almost pure luck but with the Astro the dog learns that you will find him and seems to compensate and holds point with confidence. Definitely improved team work. There is one reoccurring problem that can cause confusion, extra legwork and boot wear. I have contacted Garmin and I don't think they have corrected the issue. It is sometimes necessary to 'calibrate compass' often. The directional pointer as well as the compass can be 25+- degrees off in just a few minutes. I went to the Garmin web site (wedupdatefinder) and down loaded the latest data and maybe that will resolve the problem. Overall a great unit and a welcome addition to the hunt. Don't leave home without it. OR-GONE OLD BOY
